In 2009 eQuality Farms was created. eQuality Farms pays the wages to a crew of eight adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to work at the farm and farmers’ markets, as well as providing therapeutic-educational opportunities to 40 individuals. This entrepreneurial project has grown into an eleven – acre farm owned and operated by eQuality-Pathways to Potential in Buffalo, MN. At eQuality Farms, Associates plant, nurture, and harvest organic vegetables and flowers through both field and high tunnel production. Associates sell the produce and flowers at 2 local farmers’ markets per week, from June through October and now expanding to a winter market, from November – March.
Aside from farmers’ markets, eQuality offers Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares to the public and to group homes for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. By delivering fresh, organically-grown vegetables to the doors of group homes, complete with recipes and menu planning information, associates promote good health in the entire developmental disabilities community.
“Every week during the growing season I look forward to my fresh box of vegetables from eQuality. It’s really fun (and sustainable) to create a weekly menu based on the vegetables that are in season. I love finding new recipes and sharing these fresh and healthy options with my family and friends. I am also proud to say that participating in a CSA is both nutritionally and financially beneficial. I recently did some pricing at a local grocery store and I found that the CSA box (averaging $16.50 per week for a half share and an 18-week season) is a MUCH more affordable option than purchasing a similar selection of vegetables at the store. The contents of a typical mid-season box would cost around $25.50 for regular produce, and $55.80 for organic produce! With all the health benefits of eating fresh vegetables, the cost-savings of investing in a CSA, the convenience of delivery, and the environmentally friendly benefits of buying local and organic – why wouldn’t you participate?” – Emily Miller, Community Life Coordinator Hammer Residence Inc.
eQuality Farms is also classroom, where Associates learn about everything from pollination to poetry. Over 40 associates benefit from weekly therapeutic-educational opportunities during the months of June-September. Associates who participate in these classes can speak to the nutritional benefits of organically grown produce.
eQuality Farms is not only an incredible opportunity for the individuals we serve but it is also an environment that teaches our community to see beyond walls and limitations. Our associates are the innovators that create positive change through the produce they grow.
