We got some rain last weekend, right behind Friday’s harvest, which was perfect timing. Now we have the high temperatures over the next few days, which is exactly what we need for our warm weather crops such as Squash, Peppers, Beans and Tomatoes etc. One thing that doesn’t like the heat are Peas, so this will likely be the last week of some of the best Snap Peas we’ve ever grown. The Broccoli came in this week as projected. Again, this is the best Broccoli we’ve grown to date. The heads are large, uniform and they taste delicious. Cauliflower is starting to open up. New this week is Cabbage, and we’re very happy with how it’s looking thus far. We’ve caught up to the Lettuce and will be taking a few weeks off from it. This is the stretch of the Summer where lettuce is challenging to grow because of the heat. However, we do have heat tolerant varieties that we’re beginning to plant right now. The wait won’t be long. Kale serves as a great replacement for Lettuce in the mid-Summer months and we’ll be providing some creative ways in which to use raw kale come next week. Our Beets and Carrots are coming along slowly, we pulled a few bunches of each for the market last weekend, and hope to have much more very soon. Basil next week. One other thing that loves the rain followed by heat are the weeds! So that’s what we’ll be focusing on this week, weeding , thinning root vegetables and trying to stay cool!
